Canadian muskie released after a quick photo and measurement. Bear's Den Lodge has encouraged the release of all muskies under 50 inches to allow the continued growth of a trophy fishery.

What the Outdoor Writers are reporting:

Bear’s Den Lodge, French River, Canada is listed as the "Premier Fishing Lodge" in the sports section of the Chenango County Hometown Daily, August 3, 1995 by Bob McNitt, Outdoor Writer lists and states "Bear’s Den Lodge has one of the best reputations on the river". Art Barefoot is known "as one of the top muskie specialists on the river," reported by Bob McNitt. In fact, Art’s name is listed in the Freshwater Fishing Record Books near the top of the muskellunge category as the 14 Pound Line Class World Record Muskie Holder – 59 pounds, 11 ounces, which is on display in the main lodge. Art states, "Muskie will not only eat, but target, prey 45 percent the size of the predator."

Larry Ramsell, Research Editor, Musky Hunter visited Bear’s Den Lodge lists Art’s fish as the largest "verified" musky from the French River and "realistically be considered the second 60 pound fish caught in the past 2 years." as reported in 1989.

In the Outdoor Section of the Sudbury Star by Bruce Heideman, Art Barefoot explains that fish uses current and back eddies like other structure, while tending to hang "in the slack water near strong current so all they have to do is wait for the food to come to them."

Dick Sternberg of the Fishing Library Books "Fishing River and Streams", case study credits Art Barefoot, Bear's Den Lodge owner, with assistance with the case study of the French River and utilizes his expertise and knowledge showing photos of the fish released, lures, and the how to fish the area in detail.

"Greatest Fishing Locales of North America," by Ken Schultz list Bear’s Den Lodge as one of the top 60 places to fish in Freshwater and Saltwater in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ken lists the French River, Ontario as "Destinations in SPECTACULAR FISHING".

Babe Winkelman, of "Good Fishing" TV show lists "Bear’s Den Lodge as a top pick for a world class fishery for muskie, walleye, pike, and bass."

Just a short note to let you know I had a super time at "The French". Your hospitality, as always, is overwhelming. It was nice getting to know you both better, as well.

My trip home went smooth, but a part of me was still there pounding the water. Admittedly, I'm now obsessed with the quest for a monster musky. Especially after hooking and loosing such a "horse".

Thanks again. Hopefully we'll see you in September, but, as expected, I have tons of work to catch up on.
